Last leg to San Francisco

I’m on watch and we are in the fog again. Shouldn’t surprise anyone considering how close to land we are. Fog makes the ocean feel narrow and closed. It’s thick enough that I can’t see very far even in the dark.

The bioluminescence is particularly bright tonight. It illuminates everything it contacts. It is magical to know a dolphin is playing around the boat when all you have for proof is the splash of the water and a string of disturbed bioluminescence. Earlier I could swear I saw a whale just under the surface of the water, 50 ft off the port side lite up by bioluminescence. It was ghostly. But the fog was so thick that maybe it was a trick of the green running light and bioluminescence from our wake bouncing off the fog. I like the thought of whales better.

It’s fun to listen to the birds chirping in the dark. I have no idea where they are, but because sound carries so well over water, I can hear them fairly well. -Karri
