Dear Kevin,

We are on our way out of Monterey Bay headed to San Simeon Bay. From there we head to Morrro Bay. We went to bed at 10:30pm in anticipation of an early morning wake up at 4am. I always worry if I will be able to sleep when we have early out times. It’s hard to quiet the brain. I worry if we will remember all the things we need to: oil check, attach mainsail halyard, preventer lines, is everything stowed, are the hatches closed? These are just a few things. But, I did in fact get good sleep and now we are out.

If you ever have the chance to see Monterey from the bay at night you should take it. The city is lovely all lit up with lights, especially Cannery Row. I’ve been backpacking out where no light pollution can reach. But you haven’t truly seen a beautiful night sky until you are out on the ocean on a clear moonless night. Then, as dawn creeps over the horizon turning the world shades of pink and orange, it is breathtaking.

We are staying close to land for these short hops. Not much more than 10-15nm (nautical miles). And unfortunately when we want to move on from a place there is too little wind to sail. We have done a LOT of motoring down the coast. But it seems to be a game of extremes: too much or too little wind.

The marine life around Monterey was fun and plentiful. We saw seals and sea otters daily. The seagulls are a constant companion. We had one in particular that showed up several days on a neighboring boat to shriek for hours. The sea lions laze about on the jetty and never stop barking. As we left one made the most mournful sound, a great sad groan. We concur. We’ll miss Monterey.
