Of flying fish, whales, and pots

Tue Nov 26 2019 13:21:00 GMT-0800 (Pacific Standard Time)

We left Isla Cedros at 8am this morning with SV Yatra. We chose to head to Bahía Tortuga via Dewey Channel. Shorter, more narrow, full of pots (crab, lobster, etc) but without a possibly crazy tidal change.

So we have spent the day dodging pots and kelp; giant floating patches of kelp. Neither of them do you want to catch on your prop. Especially in a channel with strong current.

Along the way we saw our first flying fish glide in an arc along the water’s surface before diving back in. They look like monster dragonflies. We have not had any land on our deck yet like the poor unfortunate squid.

We were lucky enough to see a pair of whales. We have been sad at not seeing many since leaving Oregon. So they were a welcome sight!

We are excited to get to Bahía Tortuga, but have had two reports of outboards and fuel cans being stolen. We will have to be a bit vigilant. While anchored we will be waiting for strong weather. A system to our south that we don’t want to sail into, and a system arriving from the north we aren’t going to outrun because of the southern system in our way. We don’t want to risk being sandwiched between with no safe harbor. So, we will weather the northern system in Bahía Tortuga.
