Running to better weather

To say we don’t care for unprotected anchorages in heavy weather is an understatement. Turtle Bay is actually protected from the wind from several directions. However, the mouth of the bay, like most west coast anchorages, opens fully to the southwest. So, if big southwesterly winds are forecast, it not only gets high wind, but the big swell too with nothing to stop it. That means very uncomfortable at the least, and if gear/crew unprepared could be dangerous.

Depending on the weather model winds are predicted to rise to between 30-40 knots. For us, there is better weather South. We are headed into a microburst of high winds right now. 30+ knots for a short period of time. And then hopefully gone as predicted. Crazy thing to see the multi-layered clouds in front of us and know what is coming. But we are prepared.

We look forward to arriving in Bahía Magdalena sometime on Friday. There we’ll have better protection and better weather.
