A bit more weather than planned

Tue Apr 07 2020 08:30:00 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time)

The big blow Karri mentioned last post showed up in the dark. We had significant waves crashing over the boat and sustained winds over 45, gusting to 50+ knots for hours. The crew and boat fared very well, a couple equipment breakages due to the forces involved, crew in high spirits. It was a bit more than forecast, but definitely in the range we were prepared for. Glad to have a crew that is positive and handles stress well. The autopilot doesn’t handle waves that size as well as standard conditions, so we hand steered for several hours through it, which is quite tiring. On our way to Bahia de los Muertos still under sail making 7.2 knots in 21 knots of breeze with the daylight, which is all well appreciated after the wild ride last night. Still have one of the reefs in the sail even though it’s not needed, I don’t need any more speed at the moment.
