Yesterday, Aug 19, 2020, we arrived at Playa Santa Barbara from Santo Domingo at the top of Bahia Concepcion. Getting a good anchor set was frustrating. We hit gravel a few times and kept dragging through silt. Finally, on the 4th or 5th drop (I lost count) we were able to set at 3200 RPM. Set a scope of 7:1, 300 feet of chain, 32 feet of water.
We actually got sleep last night. A week of late night/early morning chubascos – high winds, lightning, wind shifts, 3+ foot wind waves causing the boat to pitch – have caused a lot of sleeplessness. So it is a little humorous that we anchor in Santa Barbara waiting for the arrival of the effects of Genevieve and we sleep very solidly.
9 am almost to the minute this morning brought fast, multi-layered clouds, a quick sudden increase in winds from a gentle 7 knots to a max gust of 52.2 knots. Santa Barbara provided the wave protection we were hoping for. The clouds brought a bit of lightning, a down pour of rain that created many happy smiles, and some rolling thunder. By 10 am the lightning, rain, and winds have dissipated. We are back to a lazy 3 knots of wind, cloud cover, and blissfully cooler temperatures than the 100 degrees we have been experiencing.
