We went to Santa Rosalia in August to pick up packages and await weather. We spent about 1.5 weeks in a marina for the first time since leaving La Cruz. As we waited in Santa Rosalia and enjoyed the marina swimming pool when it became too hot to be in the the boat, we made plans for seeking out whale sharks. These large docile creatures are fish or feeder sharks. One of 3 known types in the world. Every year they come to the area around Bahia de los Angeles and chill for a few months feeding in the nutrient rich water. Who would want to miss the ability to swim with them? Not us.
So when the time came, we left Santa Rosalia and stopped at San Francisquito, and Don Juan on the way. We went slightly north of BofLA to La Gringa hoping to see the whale sharks. Instead on Sept 22, we were treated to orcas with a calf and a few sea lions. The orcas came right into La Gringa bay. It was stunning. Our time in the Puget Sound never revealed them to us.
Next we backtracked and stopped over at BofLA for a bit of internet before moving just south to La Mona. We heard that La Mona is the place to be for whale sharks. And thanks to another cruiser on Sept 24 we and 4 other boats got to swim with a whale shark! It was a spectacular experience to be so close to such a large sea creature covered in remoras.
Today we are heading back down to Don Juan to chill for a bit as we wait out weather. Our near goal is to head to Puerto Penasco, ETA beginning of October. We will be hauling out the boat for new bottom paint, new batteries, and a few other projects.
