The beginning of a new month

We arrived in Puerto Refugio on October 1, 2020. It is the northern tip of Archangel Island. The area is stunning, but with limited protection from northerly winds. On one island is a sea lion rookery. Small caves line areas, and reefs have a nice selection of colorful fish.

Yesterday we spent the morning checking out the sea lions. There were plenty of pups hiding among the rocks. We kept our distance in the dinghy so they weren’t disturbed too much. The big males were quite vocal with their displeasure when we drifted to close.

A large bird poop covered rock sits in the middle of the ring of islands. At a distance it looks like sea lions barking at the sky. We stopped there for a snorkel and saw hogfish, hawkfish, grouper, starfish and turtles. The turtles were the best. They are so graceful and lovely in the water. There were at least 4 at once and one stopped, just drifting in the water eye to eye with me.

From snorkeling we took a tour of the entire bay and scoped out our next snorkeling spot. I’m a little saddened we will spend so little time here this first trip. Hopefully we can stop here again.

Tomorrow we leave for a overnight passage to arrive in Puerto Penasco on October 5. Then lots of work begins on the boat.
