Catching up – Hakahetau Bay, Ua Pou, Marquesas

Long term consistent blogging is clearly not my forte.  However, it is high time to catch up on our travels.  I last blogged about a year ago and I have a lot to catch up on.

Pulsar’s adventures left off leaving Hakahau, Ua Pou because the swell was awful and we were unprotected from it.  Our solution was to round the corner and anchor at Hakahetau Bay, Ua Pou.

Hakahetau was one of the best places we visited.  It had little to do with the protected anchorage, though that helped after the last one. It wasn’t the scenery, lovely as it always was in the Marquesas.  It was simply the fun we had with our buddy boat visiting the small town, checking out the chocolate plantation, playing in the mosquito infested waterfall, and eating world famous French bbq ribs.

The waterfall was high on our list of to-dos and we went to visit it the day after heavy rainfall.  We walked there on a sunny day which was lovely after the rain.  We went prepared to swim and play.  This was a treat because not you are not allowed in all waterfalls in the Marquesas.  Many are off limits as part of an island’s water supply.  Once there, we were stunned by the force of the water gushing from above.  We spent a couple of hours playing in the water and the fall.

Another highlight was Chez Pierre owned by…you guessed it, Pierre. We spoke with him while having a few beers and made reservations for dinner. He provided an amazing feast of delicious food and boasted of having a few of his famous award winning bbq ribs still left if anyone wanted them. Graham took him up on it. Best decision ever. We felt even luckier because Pierre was going on a 2 month or more vacation and this was the last meal from his restaurant for a while.

We stayed in Hakehetau for about 10 days and then needed to head back to Nuku Hiva to pick up a new charge controller for the generator. It is always something with the generator. 🙃
